Kolkata: The BJP has demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and State Sports Minister Anoop Biswas, accusing them of "bowing India's head before the entire world" and "playing recklessly with the emotions of the people of West Bengal."
The party expressed its disappointment, claiming that the event had wasted the hard-earned money of common people and was an attempt to use Lionel Messi as a political tool ahead of elections.
In a post on X, the BJP wrote, “First, people were forced to pay nearly ₹10,000 each, leading to a ticket-selling scam. Then, after bringing everyone into the stadium, Messi was taken away. The hard-earned money of ordinary people went into the pockets of powerful individuals, and ahead of the elections, the Trinamool Congress thought it would gain politically by using Messi as a tool.”
Furthermore, the BJP criticised the lathi charge on fans by West Bengal police. "Instead, angry crowds stormed the ground, and severe chaos broke out. Mamata Banerjee is fully responsible for this situation, and she must step down. Merely to watch their beloved footballer, the people of Kolkata had to face police lathi-charge," the post added.
